How does EFT Work?

EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is a simple, painless technique of remembering and reprocessing any painful memory or current anxiety while tapping on a series of meridian points along the face, breast bone, underarm and hands.

Imagine that a frightening, traumatic or painful experience overloads your emotional circuits and you experience the equivalent of computer LOCK-UP.   Every sound, smell, and emotion painfully and continuously replays on the monitor in your mind.  You cannot think clearly, nothing computes.  The picture becomes distorted and the information is scrambled creating fear and anxiety that spreads to other aspects of your life. The memory is as vivid and real as if it were happening NOW when weeks or years may have passed.  EFT gently and quickly clears the disrupted energy that is causing the physical tension while it assists the mind to fully and finally complete the cognitive processing that was "short circuited" at the time of the incident.  The result is an amazing physical and emotional release.

A few comments from actual clients:

"I am almost afraid to think it is really gone.  Can it be that simple?"  - P.W.

"It is like a huge weight is off my chest."  - B.R.

"Man, that is amazing! It's ALL gone! I mean, you can't deny the change.  It is instant! And it is so simple!  I mean, it is all gone!"  - T.P.

"I actually felt the energy shift on the left side of my body! It was like...smoke or something just puffed up and went away." - J.L.

Where did EFT come from?

Gary Craig is the Stanford trained engineer that created Emotional Freedom Techniques . He received training from Dr. Roger Callahan in Voice Technology therapy and went on to develop the simple, user friendly therapy we call EFT.

The condensed short story as I know it:

Dr. Callahan was frustrated with the amount of time his patients were expending to get well.  He began to study alternative methods about the time that Dr. John Diamond discovered and began teaching Applied Kinesiology (Muscle testing).  After learning A.K., Dr. Callahan was in session with "Mary" at his home poolside.  Her water phobia had been unrelenting to his therapy.  At one point in their conversation he told Mary to "tap under her eye". She did as instructed and then jumped up from her chair and RAN TO THE SIDE OF THE POOL where she bent over and began splashing the water on her face.  Needless to say Dr. Callahan was panicked and ran after her yelling for her not to jump in.  When he reached her, she was in tears saying..."It is gone. That terrible tightness in my stomach is gone."

This was a woman who had not been able to bath in more than one inch of water.   She would not drive in the rain or take her children to the pool or the beach.  After that session, Mary drove along the California coast to the beach, in the rain.

Dr. Callahan developed intricate machinery that could determine the tension in a persons body by voice.  As I understand it, he has had amazing results with everything from phobias to food allergies.  The protocol and training  Dr. Callahan designed was offered and accepted by Gary Craig for $100,000.00.  After some time, Gary Craig developed the simple and equally effective protocol he named Emotional Freedom Techniques.

What Can I Treat With EFT?

  • Low self esteem and self concept, self-doubt or self-confidence, feeling unworthy or undeserving; confusion, indecisiveness, self-distrust

  • Self-judgment, self-criticism, self-rejection, blame, shame. Reduced mental, emotional, physical and social skills, talents, and personal effectiveness

  • Poor personal effectiveness & weak ego strength

  • Dysfunctional and unsatisfying relationships, distrust, inability to experience intimacy or to connect with others

  • Lack of personal fulfillment or satisfaction, boredom

  • Poor business and financial decisions and self-limiting income, striving but not achieving in work or school

  • Poor health and physical functioning, low energy, fatigue, body pains, allergies, rashes, infections, low immunity

  • Lack of zest for living, inability to embrace and enjoy life, shut down, numb

  • Phobias, anxieties, fears, dread, worry, apprehension, insecurity, procrastination, immobilization

  • Loneliness, abandonment, isolation, feeling empty

  • Depression, despair, discouragement, disappointment

  • Guilt, shame, embarrassment, self-consciousness, shyness

  • Anger, rage, resentment, bitterness toward self and others

  • Sadness, grief, sorrow, deep hurt, helplessness, hopelessness, discouragement, despair, heartache, heartbreak, remorse

  • Underachieving sports performance and physical skills and ability

  • Poor sexual performance and satisfaction, sexual dysfunction

  • Inability to follow medical or nutritional directions, medication non-compliance, chronic medical symptoms and complaints

  • inability to trust, to connect or commune with, or to receive from God

Very often, additional unfortunate results of years of subconscious programming can greatly contribute to, and often help create or maintain, debilitating medical and health problems.  These may include many allergies, degenerative diseases, and immune deficiency diseases.

While EFT may be used as a stand-alone methodology for helping eliminate psychological and physical problems, combining EFT with medical and/or complementary treatment and spiritual work makes an even more comprehensive impact on the person's adaptation, growth, personal effectiveness, and balance in relating to and living his/her life.

What does SUDS mean?

(SUDS) is the acronym for Subjective Units of Distress Scale (Wolpe, 1958). The SUDS scale is a simple and practical tool for monitoring the effectiveness of EFT throughout the session.

The client will “tune in" to the issue and rate their level of distress on a scale from 1-10 (10 being the most distress).  The practitioner then guides the client through the EFT protocol using the SUDS numbers as indication of the “remaining” level of distress.  Ideally this is repeated until the SUDS level is at ZERO. This will indicate that the  particular aspect of that issue is CLEAR and is no longer detrimental to the client.

What is "Borrowed Benefits"?

Borrowed Benefits is the name Gary Craig has given to the phenomenon of healing multiple issues in a group of people while addressing the presenting issue of one person.

For example, in a recent class we addressed Amy's concern about moving her daughter into a different child care while Brad, had mentioned guilt over a money choice and Ginny wanted to clear the phrase, there is never enough.  We all tapped  as THOUGH WE  WERE TAPPING FOR AMY'S ISSUE. We said  the exact same words and  tapped in the exact same places  AS IF WE WERE AMY. Each person made headway on their own issue because they had their own issue "in the background".

Interestingly, if you keep your own issue "in the background" while tapping for someone, you will likely resolve your issue EVEN THOUGH YOU ARE TAPPING FOR SOMEONE ELSE'S PROBLEM.  You will, in effect, be creating your own parallels and "Borrowing Benefits" from someone else.

Why is EFT considered to be so effective/powerful?

I think EFT is so effective because of its holistic approach.  Body, mind and spirit are engaged, addressed and healed.  Addressing one aspect of the person at a time ignores the healing needed in the other two.

Is EFT more effective if used with affirmations?

EFT is best at releasing the doubts and limiting beliefs that make affirmations ineffective.  One can affirm something a million times and have little, if any, success if the underlying belief is that what you are affirming is NOT true in any way.  Once we use EFT to clear the "disbelief" the affirmations anchor with EFT effortless and the manifesting becomes very simple.

When should I see/feel the effects of EFT?

Most clients feel EFT within minutes of beginning the process.

The protocol has a built in test meter that we call SUDS...

Wherein the client determines the level of distress at the beginning of the protocol and then after experiencing EFT the client is asked to

Determine if that number has changed and to what degree.

Question:  The purpose of my email is to find out about your 100% satisfaction guarantee.  How would you decide if the treatment worked?  Oftentimes, things work at the time but the very next morning is hell for me again.  Please let me know.  I am certainly not trying to get something for nothing.  I just am very tired and skeptical about trying new treatments.

Answer:

I understand your skepticism.  Our Guarantee is three fold:

1.  I will make EFT work for you.  The SUDS level will decrease.

2.  I will present ideas or insights that will be new and inspiring to you.

3.  You will “feel” uplifted and encouraged at the conclusion of the session.

If you do not feel that all three of these stipulations have been met during our time together, your payment will gleefully be refunded.

Occasionally we have clients that experience what you are describing. They feel great relief and balance only to have the feelings “sneak back up” on them.  We consider this GOOD NEWS!  We believe that this is a clear indication that we have “hit the nail on the head!”  All of our sessions are recorded and we encourage clients to keep tapping AND we ask them to look for what it is that we have stirred up.  Is there another aspect or part of the story that we missed?  Is there a new memory all together?  If it is physical pain doesn’t it make sense that ANY RELIEF indicates the possibility of complete healing?  We book sessions one per week and ask clients that “hang in there” and keep tapping.  Clients that stick with the program ALWAYS tell me they are so glad they did.  The pain, the anxiety, the fear (at least with my clients) has ALWAYS been erased over time. If however you are not satisfied with your session we will refund your payment without hesitation.

Would you please tell me how a session goes?  Is one issue discussed at a time?  Or can several issues be combined together?

While I never know how the session will go and where it will lead, it is my goal to

cover as much ground as possible.  Meaning if we can link issues and break them up

In one session that is wonderful and that would be my choice however, issues have aspects and I would prefer to completely resolve ONE issue than trim 3 or 4.

Prior to our session you will be asked to complete an intake form that asks three simple questions:

˘  What is the main problem or challenge

˘  How will you know you have had some resolution to that challenge

˘  What will complete resolution look like

Once we meet in person or over the phone I will have reviewed those answers and then:

˘  I will ask about your spiritual beliefs to see if we are “speaking the same language”.

˘  We will then discuss what your specific challenge is, I will ask questions and when I rely upon inspiration regarding the place to start applying EFT.

˘  It is not uncommon for me to work several “issues” in one session when they are interconnected.

How far out should I schedule an appointment?

I am frequently booked 6 to 8 weeks in advance.  Each client is booked for a series of three (3) sessions; preferably one per week for three weeks.  I do not book more than one session per week per client so that you have time to assimilate the new ideas and energy.  Should you for any reason decide after the first session that you would like to release the remaining appointments I will simply call someone on my waiting list and we will cover those appointments.
